A Master of Two Morphs:

The Short-tailed Hawk is a captivating sight, but its appearance can vary depending on the individual. Some soar with plumage as dark as dark chocolate, and their underside reveals lighter tones on the outer flight feathers. These are the adult dark morphs, masters of camouflage that can blend perfectly with the shadows.

The juveniles of the dark morph share a similar base color, but their chest is adorned with distinctive spots, a pattern that fades with age. They also lack the terminal band, a dark band on the wingtip, present in adults.

But the Short-tailed Hawk also has a lighter side. The adult light morphs are a study in contrasts: their underside shines with pristine white, while their upper side is bathed in warm brown. A rusty patch adorns the side of their neck, adding a touch of color. A dark hood frames their face, with a stark white throat completing the picture. The juveniles of the light morph resemble their adult counterparts, minus the rusty patch.

A tell-tale sign for all Short-tailed Hawks, regardless of morph, is their tail. True to their name, it is shorter than that of many other hawk species. Additionally, all morphs exhibit a faintly barred pattern on the tail, a subtle feature that aids identification.

The Grace of a Hunter:

The Short-tailed Hawk is a gliding specialist. With wings extended and tips slightly upturned, they patrol the skies in search of unsuspecting prey. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot lizards, snakes, small mammals, and even large insects from a distance. When a target is identified, the hawk dives at incredible speed, often tucking its wings close to its body for a powerful descent. This aerial ambush technique leaves little chance of escape for the prey.

Finding Their Short-tailed Success:

Our mountain retreat provides the perfect setting to witness these gliding hunters in action. Keep your eyes peeled to see them soaring high, their sharp silhouettes against the clear blue sky. With a bit of patience, you might even witness their dramatic hunting dives, a testament to their predatory prowess.

Más Allá de las Montañas:

While the Short-tailed Hawk is a common sight at our retreat, its range extends far beyond the mountains. It is found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, from southern Florida to northern Argentina. So, even if you’re not amidst our mountain peaks, you might encounter this adaptable bird elsewhere in Central and South America.

Short-tailed Hawk – A Costa Rican Treasure:

The Short-tailed Hawk is a magnificent emblem of Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity. Its diverse plumage, graceful gliding, and impressive hunting skills make it a captivating addition to any birdwatching adventure. So keep your eyes on the sky during your visit to our mountain retreat. You might be rewarded with a glimpse of this gliding success story.
