Master of the Heights

The Double-toothed Kite, aptly named for the notches on its upper beak, is not your average hawk. Unlike its larger and more aggressive cousins, this slender raptor (29-35 cm long) prefers a more relaxed hunting approach. It glides effortlessly on broad wings (wingspan of 60-72 cm), patrolling the forest interior for unsuspecting prey.

Look for them mid-morning, with characteristic V-shaped wings, spread tail, and white under-tail feathers creating a distinctive cloud. This silent predator often goes unnoticed, but its sharp eyes miss nothing.

Glimpse of Beauty

Adult Double-toothed Kites are an example of understated elegance. Their plumage reflects the sunlight filtering through the leaves. The head is a cool bluish-gray, contrasting with lighter gray upper parts. The underparts are a warm rufous, sometimes barred with pale stripes, adding a touch of vitality. A black stripe on the throat, often visible when perched, adds a touch of personality.
