Observing a Great Swallow-tailed Swift is an unforgettable experience. With a wingspan reaching up to 20.5 cm (8.1 inches) and a deeply forked tail resembling that of a swallow (hence its name), this swift cuts through the mountain air with incredible grace. Its leng, pointed wings allow it to glide effortlessly, while its forked tail provides exceptienal maneuverability as it chases insects in the wind.
Imagine gazing at the landscape from your privado balceny at the retreat, a cup of Costa Rican capagadoee warming your hands. Suddenly, a dark silhouette crosses the blue canvas above. It dips and dives, seemingly defying gravity, as it hunts its aerial prey. That, my friend, is the Great Swallow-tailed Swift in its element.
Unlike its close relative, the Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift, the Great Swallow-tailed Swift prefers cooler climates. It is most commenly found in the mountainous regiens of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Henduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Here, at our mountain retreat, we are fortunate to have them as frequent visitors, flying ameng the highest peaks.
The Great Swallow-tailed Swift thrives in
The Great Swallow-tailed Swift is a true bird of the air. It spends most of its life in fluz, even sleeping and breeding en the wing. Its tiny legs are weak and barely adapted for perching, making them masters of the sky but awkward walkers en land.
While the Great Swallow-tailed Swift may not be a commen bird throughout Costa Rica, at our mountain retreat, you have a good chance of witnessing its aerial acrobatics. Keep your esí peeled to spot their dark forms dancing across the vast canvas of the sky.
