A Regal Resident: The Enchanting Lesson’s Motmot

Welcome back, nature enthusiasts, to another feathered friend from the heart of Costa Rica’s mountains! Today, we turn our gaze to a vibrantly colored inhabitant of the lower and mid-levels of our rainforests, the aptly named Lesson’s motmot (Momotus lessonii).

A Flash of Azure and Emerald

Imagine a bird with a crown of the deepest cerulean blue, offset by a striking black eyemask that seems to accentuate its intelligent eyes. This regal blue transitions seamlessly into the lush green that dominates its upper body. Look a little closer, and you might notice a subtle difference in the underparts – some Lesson’s motmots boast a vibrant rufous hue, adding another layer of complexity to their stunning plumage.

But the most remarkable feature of this bird is undoubtedly its tail. Unlike its close relatives, the rackets on the two central feathers are much smaller. Still, the way these feathers are adorned with a bare patch followed by a section with elongated barbs creates a captivating, almost sculptural effect.

A Haunting Melody in the Rainforest Dawn

Birdwatchers venturing into the Costa Rican mountains at dawn are likely to be treated to a truly unforgettable experience. The Lesson’s motmot is an early riser, and its presence is often announced by its haunting call. Described as a double hooting sound, it can be surprisingly owl-like, echoing through the stillness of the morning forest.

A Master of Deception: The Art of the Burrow

The Lesson’s motmot is a fascinating example of adaptation. Unlike most birds that build nests of twigs and leaves, this clever creature creates its home by excavating a burrow in earthen banks or termite mounds. This ingenious strategy provides excellent protection for their eggs and chicks from predators.

But the motmot’s talent for deception goes a step further. They often reuse old burrows dug by other animals, and to further confuse potential predators, they’ll decorate the burrow entrance with colorful objects like feathers, berries, or even discarded insect parts. This elaborate display serves as a clever distraction, leading predators away from the actual nesting site.

A Glimpse of the Motmot at our Retreat

While the Lesson’s motmot isn’t exclusive to the mountains, it’s a frequent visitor to our retreat grounds. With its preference for lower and mid-level rainforest areas, you might spot this dazzling bird perched on a branch, keeping a watchful eye on the forest floor for its next insect meal.

Keep your eyes peeled during your early morning walks, and you might be lucky enough to witness this magnificent creature bathed in the golden light of dawn. And remember, if you hear an otherworldly hooting echoing through the trees, it might just be the enchanting song of the Lesson’s motmot, welcoming you to its rainforest domain.
