High in the lush canopy of the Costa Rican mountains, a vibrant splash of color catches your eye. It’s the Scarlet-rumped Cacique, a stunning blackbird with a secret – a fiery red rump! This charismatic resident of our mountain retreat is a true delight for birdwatchers, adding a touch of the exotic to your rainforest experience.
A Bird of Distinction
The Scarlet-rumped Cacique (Cacicus uropygialis) is a medium-sized songbird, typically around 23 cm (9 inches) for males and slightly smaller for females. Its defining characteristic is, of course, the brilliant scarlet patch on its lower back and upper rump. This flash of red becomes particularly prominent during flight, making the cacique a captivating sight as it flits through the dense foliage.
But the red isn’t the only splash of color. The Scarlet-rumped Cacique boasts a sleek black plumage that shimmers in the dappled sunlight filtering through the rainforest canopy. Its eyes are a bright, captivating blue, adding another layer of intrigue to its appearance. The long, pointed bill is a pale yellow, perfectly complementing the overall color scheme.
Sexual Dimorphism at Play
Like many birds in the Icteridae family, the Scarlet-rumped Cacique exhibits sexual dimorphism. While both males and females share the same basic black plumage and red rump, the males tend to be larger and have a deeper, glossier black. Females, on the other hand, are smaller and their black feathers have a duller sheen. Even juvenile caciques are distinct, sporting a brownish tinge to their plumage and a brownish-orange rump patch before maturing into their full black-and-red glory.
A Life in the Trees
The Scarlet-rumped Cacique is a true denizen of the rainforest canopy. You’ll find them flitting through the upper reaches of the trees, often in small flocks. They’re agile fliers, adept at maneuvering through the dense foliage. Their diet consists primarily of fruit, insects, and nectar, making them valuable pollinators as they flit from flower to flower.
A Song of the Rainforest
The Scarlet-rumped Cacique isn’t just a visual treat; it’s also a talented vocalist. Their song is a complex and varied series of whistles, clicks, and warbles, often described as loud and harsh. While not necessarily melodic to human ears, their calls play a vital role in communication within their social groups.
