A Tale of Two Plumages

The White-winged Tanager is a captivating example of sexual dimorphism, where males and females sport distinct appearances. The male is a sight to behold. Imagine a cardinal dipped in fire: its body bursts into a fiery red, contrasted by a defined black mask extending from its beak to its forehead. The black wings with crisp white wing bars complete this striking attire.

The female White-winged Tanager takes a more understated approach. Her entire body is bathed in a delightful mix of olive yellow, a beautiful complement to the vibrant greens of the tropical forest canopy. However, she retains the characteristic black wings adorned with white wing bars, a signature of the species.

Una Vida Entre las Hojas

These medium-sized songbirds, measuring around 13 cm in length, prefer the cool, moist evergreen and pine-oak forests. Look up! You’ll find them flitting among the canopy leaves, often in pairs or small family groups. They are also known to join mixed-species feeding flocks, creating a vibrant tapestry of birds feeding together.

A Treat for the Ears

The White-winged Tanager is not only a visual delight, but also a talented musician. Their songs are described as sharp, sibilant whistles, adding another layer of charm to their presence. Keep your ears open as you explore the trails, you might be serenaded by this hidden songster!

Un Festín para los Sentidos

These energetic birds are primarily insectivorous, flitting from branch to branch in search of their next meal. They readily devour a variety of insects, including beetles, caterpillars, and grasshoppers. They will also occasionally supplement their diet with fruits and berries, adding a touch of sweetness to their day.

A Bit of Pure Birdwatching

Spotting a White-winged Tanager is a guaranteed thrill for any bird enthusiast. Their vivid colors and lively personalities make them a joy to observe. With a little patience and a keen eye, you may encounter this feathered wonder on your next Costa Rican adventure at Hotel Rivel.
