Welcome back to our Costa Rican avian adventure! Today, we delve into the cloud forests, high up in the mountains, to meet a truly unique resident: the Prong-billed Barbet. This quirky critter, with its comical bill and surprising song, is a favorite among birders visiting our mountain retreat.
A Distinctive Appearance
The Prong-billed Barbet is a medium-sized bird, reaching about 7 inches (18 cm) in length. Its plumage is a symphony of earthy tones – a warm ochre washes over its face and neck, transitioning to a brownish olive on the upper back and a cooler olive green on the lower back and rump. But the true showstopper is the bill! A silvery-gray to bluish beak, tipped with dark and boasting a unique feature – a prominent notch on the lower mandible, giving rise to its name. Males can be further distinguished by a glossy black tuft of feathers at the back of the crown, adding a touch of elegance.
A Forest Dweller
These fascinating birds are resident breeders in the high-altitude forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. Our mountain retreat lies right within their preferred habitat – the cool, perpetually damp embrace of the montane evergreen forest. Here, amidst the towering trees draped in mosses and epiphytes, the Prong-billed Barbet thrives.
While not the most colorful bird you’ll encounter, its cryptic plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into the mossy greens and browns of the forest canopy. Look for them perched on mid-story branches or flitting through the leaves, their sharp eyes scanning for prey.
A Social Life
Unlike many solitary birds, Prong-billed Barbets are quite social creatures. Outside of breeding season, they forage in small flocks, their calls echoing through the misty forests. Their primary method of communication is a rather comical “cwa-cwa-cwa-cwa” duet, often sung by mated pairs or two individuals within a group.
Come breeding season, however, the social dynamic shifts. Pairs form strong bonds and become fiercely territorial, defending their chosen nesting cavity in a tree trunk. Both parents participate in raising their young, taking turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.
