Unveiling the Greater Ani: A Glossy Jewel in the Costa Rican Rainforest

Here at Hotel Rivel, nature’s wonders surround you. From the vibrant flora to the symphony of bird calls, every day is an exciting exploration. Today, we turn our gaze to a captivating resident – the Greater Ani.

A Striking Presence

The Greater Ani is a magnificent sight. Imagine a bird cloaked in a coat of glistening black, its feathers catching the sunlight and shimmering with an iridescent sheen of blue, green, and purple. This glossy plumage, particularly on the wings and tail, makes the Ani a true standout in the Costa Rican rainforest.

Built for Busyness

Standing tall at about 18 inches, the Greater Ani has a distinctive build. Its long, floppy tail provides excellent balance as it navigates the dense undergrowth. The short, broad, and deeply ridged black bill hints at its curious feeding habits, which we’ll explore later.

Family First

The Greater Ani thrives in close-knit family groups. Spotting a lone Ani is rare; they’re almost always seen in these social units, flitting through the forest together, their calls echoing through the trees. Their vocalizations are a mix of croaks and a rather amusing, turkey-like gobble – a sound aptly described as “kro-koro.”

A Life by the Water’s Edge

Unlike some of their ani cousins, the Greater Ani is a creature of habit. Unlike the Groove-billed Ani, a more common sight here at Hotel Rivel, the Greater Ani prefers life by the water. They favor the lush greenery bordering slow-moving rivers and serene lakes, where they can forage and raise their young.

Masters of the Menu

The Greater Ani’s diet is as diverse as its habitat. They’re opportunistic feeders, gleefully consuming a variety of insects, fruits, and even small reptiles. Their powerful bills are perfectly adapted for cracking open tough insect shells and seeds. Interestingly, unlike some cuckoos, the Greater Ani doesn’t lay its eggs in other birds’ nests. They’re dedicated parents, constructing their own communal nests and raising their young together as a family.

A Sight to Remember

If you’re fortunate enough to spot a Greater Ani during your stay at Hotel Rivel, take a moment to appreciate its beauty. This magnificent bird, with its glossy plumage, social nature, and preference for waterside habitats, is a true gem of the Costa Rican rainforest. Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails, for a glimpse of the Greater Ani is an unforgettable experience.
