Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, we pride ourselves on being deeply immersed in the vibrant tapestry of life that thrives in our lush, green haven. While the sights and sounds of toucans, motmots, and bellbirds are commonplace, occasionally, an unexpected guest graces us with its presence. Today, we delve into the unlikely encounter with the Western Gull, a visitor from faraway shores.
The Western Gull, a stocky seabird with a stout yellow bill and bright pink legs, is a native of the Pacific Coast of North America, ranging from Alaska all the way down to Baja California. Their natural habitat is the open ocean, beaches, and bays. So, what brings this coastal dweller to the heart of Costa Rica’s mountains?
The answer is – rarity. Western Gulls are vagrants in Costa Rica. While a few sightings have been documented, encountering one is a stroke of birding luck. This makes it all the more special if you spot this impressive bird soaring over our mountain peaks.
Identification:
- Large (up to 26 inches tall) with a wingspan of up to 5.5 feet.
- Stocky build with a thick neck and a large, yellow bill with a red spot near the tip (in adults).
- Dark gray upperparts with white underparts and a white head (in adults). Immature gulls can take up to four years to acquire full adult plumage, going through stages of mottled brown and gray feathers.
- Pink legs (a key distinguishing feature from similar gulls).
Behavior:
Even if spotted, a Western Gull in Costa Rica is unlikely to linger. These are opportunistic feeders, adept at scavenging for scraps or hunting small fish. They might be seen soaring high above, or following a hunch towards potential food sources, like a rushing river where they can snatch unsuspecting prey.
Listen for:
The Western Gull’s vocalizations are loud and varied. They include barking calls, shrill screams, and drawn-out moans. While not the most melodious songbird, their calls can be a good indicator of their presence overhead.
An Unforgettable Encounter:
While a rare sight, spotting a Western Gull in Costa Rica is an unforgettable experience. It’s a reminder of the interconnectedness of our planet and the occasional surprises that nature throws our way. Even in the remote tranquility of our mountain retreat, the possibility of encountering an unexpected avian visitor adds another layer of wonder to your Costa Rican adventure.
