Spotting the Pale-billed Woodpecker

Imagine a crow-sized bird with a striking red head (males) or black head (females), both sporting a prominent crest. The Pale-billed Woodpecker boasts a pale yellow bill, a feature that sets it apart from its lookalike, the Lineated Woodpecker. Look for bold white stripes running down the bird’s back, almost forming a neat “V” against its black upperparts. The underparts are white, barred with black, completing this bold and beautiful package.

These woodpeckers prefer the middle to upper levels of the forest canopy. While they might occasionally visit forest edges or peek into semi-open areas, they avoid heavily deforested regions. So, keep your eyes peeled as you explore the lush trails around our retreat!
