Soaring Through the Unexpected: The Heermann’s Gull in Costa Rica

While Costa Rica is famed for its vibrant rainforests and exotic birds, one might not expect to find a creature of the open sea gracing our mountain ranges. But for a lucky few visitors to our retreat, a sighting of the magnificent Heermann’s Gull is a possibility!

These medium-sized gulls, with their distinct smoky-gray plumage and bright red bills, are more commonly found along the Pacific Coasts of North America and Mexico. However, during their migratory journeys, a small number of Heermann’s Gulls venture far south, gracing the Pacific shores of Costa Rica with their presence.

A Standout Amongst the Flock

The Heermann’s Gull is unlike any other gull found in Costa Rica. Here’s what makes them so distinctive:

  • Coloration: Adults boast a beautiful contrast – a smoky-gray body, blackish-gray wings with white edges, and a head that transforms throughout the year. During breeding season, the head turns a pristine white, while in the non-breeding season, it takes on a dusky gray hue with streaks. Immature Heermann’s Gulls are even more striking, with a rich, sooty-brown plumage that matures into the adult gray over several years.
  • Bill: The bright red bill with a black tip is another giveaway. This strong beak is perfectly adapted for their opportunistic feeding style.
  • Size and Shape: Heermann’s Gulls are medium-sized with long wings, a rounded head, and a straight, relatively long bill.

A Life on the Move

Heermann’s Gulls are migratory birds. They breed primarily on Isla Rasa in Mexico’s Gulf of California. Following the breeding season, they embark on a long journey northward, reaching the Pacific Coasts of Washington and British Columbia. But some intrepid individuals choose to travel even further south, with Costa Rica being their ultimate destination.

Masters of Opportunistic Feeding

While primarily fish eaters, Heermann’s Gulls are clever scavengers. They are known for their kleptoparasitic behavior, which essentially means stealing food from other birds! Their targets are often Brown Pelicans. After a pelican dives and surfaces with a catch, a Heermann’s Gull will swoop in, harassing the pelican with loud calls and dives until it relinquishes its hard-earned meal.

A Glimpse of the Unexpected

Spotting a Heermann’s Gull in Costa Rica is a rare treat. While sightings can occur along the Pacific Coast, there’s a slight chance you might see them soaring high above our mountain retreat. This is because high-altitude winds can sometimes nudge these migrating birds off course. So, keep your eyes peeled while basking on our balconies or enjoying a hike – you might just get a glimpse of this unexpected visitor!

Witnessing the Unexpected

A sighting of the Heermann’s Gull is a reminder of the interconnectedness of the natural world. These fascinating birds, on their incredible journeys, showcase the wonders of migration and adaptation. So, while on your retreat at our Costa Rican haven, keep your eyes on the skies. You might just be rewarded with a truly unforgettable avian encounter!
