Before your evening ceremony, nourish your body and mind. Drink plenty of water and spend time in quiet reflection. Meditation or deep breathing can help prepare you for the journey ahead.
Hotel Rivel offers a serene setting for exploration. Wander the property, relax by the river or waterfall, and simply soak in the natural beauty.
Key Tips:
Approach with an open mind. Trust the process and let go of expectations.
Close your eyes. Many people report vivid experiences with their eyes closed. An eye mask or shirt can help block out distractions.
Remember, Ayahuasca experiences vary greatly. Some people feel a sense of peace or connection, while others may undergo emotional release or purging.

- Wear comfortable clothes and bring many layers – nothing worse than getting cold during an intense session. The cold will also distract you from enjoying the experience.Â
Health & Wellness
The 1st session is more of an introduction to the medicine. It’s important for the guides to assess how the plant will react with your body so they serve a reduced amount but guests can return for a 2nd or 3rd or 4th serving depending on how they are feeling.Â
The following morning should be spent reflecting about the previous night’s experience. The shamans stay at the property and will be available to discuss more about your specific experience if you’d like to chat through it further.Â

Journaling can be a helpful way to process your thoughts and feelings.
Enjoy a leisurely walk or hike, or spend time meditating by the waterfall.
Some people find it helpful to talk to others about their experiences, but it’s also important to take time for yourself.
Tip: Be prepared for a deeper dive into your subconscious mind. You may encounter challenging emotions or memories.
Nutrition & Meals
The focus is still on establishing healthy eating habits.Â

Ayahuasca Ceremony #2
Meet at Restaurant @ 7pm
- Think back to the first session, did you have enough water? Did you wear appropriate clothes?
- The 2nd session is when most people have their most intense experience. They kind of know what to expect and they are ready to go “all in” and experience the medicine to the fullest.Â
Health & Wellness
We recognize that after 5 days in one place, you may feel a bit caged. We offer an optional activity for those who would like to participate in one of the best White Water Rafting experiences in the world.
The Pacuare River is about 30 minutes away and we will organize a trip for those interested. No need to confirm beforehand, we will confirm with you a couple days before to see how you’re feeling.Â
Nutrition & Meals
Drink a lot of water. Last night’s session will have taken a toll on your body and it’s normal to feel weak, dehydrated and sore. Eat lots of fruit, drink lots of water and go for a nice walk to loosen your muscles.Â
Breakfast: 8:30am
Lunch: 12:30pm
Dinner: 5:30pm
Choose from the following optional activities:
Hike through the well-maintained trails at Hotel Rivel. Tip: Pay attention to the natural beauty around you and connect with the elements.
Swim in the fresh water river Tuis. Tip: Allow yourself to feel the refreshing energy of the water.
Meditate by the waterfall. Tip: Focus on your breath and let go of any thoughts or worries.
Set goals in your private cabin. Tip: Think about what you want to achieve in your life and how ayahuasca can help you get there.
Rest and focus on your intentions. Tip: Take some time for self-care and relaxation.
Look at photos of your past to trigger memories. Tip: Reflect on your life journey and how it has led you to this point.
Spend time without technology and connect with nature. Tip: Disconnect from the digital world and focus on the present moment.
Health & Wellness
Rest and prepare for the final ceremony. As you can read below, every Ayahuasca experience is different. Sometimes, it’s more about feelings, other times, it’s more about journeys, other times, it’s this incredible display of colours and scenes.Â
Depending on the other two experiences, some people decide to opt out of the 3rd experience. Sometimes, the 2nd experience can be intense, especially when working through intense emotional trauma, for that reason, some people choose to not participate in the final session. We would encourage everyone to try, remember that you can reduce the intensity by simply drinking less medicine and assess how you feel at that time.
Every session is completely optional of course!
Â
Nutrition & Meals
Final day of being forced to eat clean! 🙂 You’ve done so well, 3 more meals to go before your final session.Â

Ayahuasca: A Journey of Healing and Discovery
Scientific Research on Ayahuasca
In recent years, there has been a growing body of scientific research exploring the effects and potential therapeutic applications of Ayahuasca. Here’s an overview of some key findings:
Neurological Effects
- Brain Plasticity: Studies have shown that Ayahuasca can increase brain plasticity, potentially facilitating the formation of new neural connections. This could explain its ability to promote cognitive flexibility and aid in breaking ingrained thought patterns (Ly et al., 2018).
- Default Mode Network (DMN): Ayahuasca has been found to reduce activity in the DMN, a brain network associated with self-referential thinking and mind-wandering. This reduction is similar to that observed in long-term meditators and may contribute to the sense of ego dissolution often reported in Ayahuasca experiences (Palhano-Fontes et al., 2015).
Mental Health Applications
- Depression: A randomized placebo-controlled trial found that a single dose of Ayahuasca rapidly reduced depressive symptoms in treatment-resistant depression, with effects lasting up to three weeks (Palhano-Fontes et al., 2019).
- Anxiety and PTSD: Preliminary studies suggest that Ayahuasca may have anxiolytic effects and could be beneficial in treating PTSD, potentially by allowing individuals to revisit traumatic memories with a new perspective (González et al., 2020).
- Addiction: Research indicates that Ayahuasca may be effective in treating substance use disorders. A study of long-term Ayahuasca users found lower rates of problematic alcohol and drug use compared to controls (Fábregas et al., 2010).
Physiological Effects
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: Some studies have suggested that components of Ayahuasca, particularly the β-carbolines found in B. caapi, may have anti-inflammatory effects (Morales-GarcÃa et al., 2017).
- Neurogenesis: Animal studies have shown that harmine, one of the main alkaloids in Ayahuasca, can stimulate the growth of new brain cells, a process known as neurogenesis (Morales-GarcÃa et al., 2017).
Long-term Effects
- Personality Changes: A study of regular Ayahuasca users found increases in the personality traits of openness and conscientiousness, as well as decreases in neuroticism (Netzband et al., 2020).
- Cognitive Function: Long-term Ayahuasca use has not been associated with cognitive impairment. In fact, some studies suggest it may enhance certain cognitive functions (Bouso et al., 2015).
While these findings are promising, it’s important to note that much of the research is still in early stages. More large-scale, controlled studies are needed to fully understand the effects and potential applications of Ayahuasca.
Expanded Section: The Plants and Preparation
Banisteriopsis caapi (Ayahuasca vine)
B. caapi contains three main alkaloids: harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine. These β-carbolines act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), which are crucial for the oral activity of DMT.
- Harvesting: The vine is typically harvested from wild plants in the rainforest. Sustainable harvesting practices are crucial to ensure the long-term availability of this sacred plant.
- Preparation: The vine is cleaned, pounded to expose the inner bark, and then boiled for many hours to extract the active compounds.
Psychotria viridis (Chacruna)
P. viridis contains N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), the primary psychoactive compound in Ayahuasca.
- Harvesting: Leaves are carefully selected, with mature leaves generally preferred for their higher DMT content.
- Preparation: The leaves are cleaned and added to the B. caapi decoction, then further boiled to extract the DMT.
Â
Additional Plants
- Diplopterys cabrerana (Chaliponga): Sometimes used as an alternative to P. viridis, it also contains DMT.
- Brugmansia (Toé): Used in some traditions, but with caution due to its potential toxicity.
- Nicotiana rustica (Mapacho): A potent tobacco often used in cleansing rituals before and after Ayahuasca ceremonies.
The Brewing Process
- Duration: The entire process can take 1-3 days, depending on the tradition and desired strength.
- Sacred Space: The preparation is typically done in a ceremonial context, with prayers, songs, and intentions set throughout the process.
- Moon Cycles: Some traditions time the brewing with specific moon phases believed to enhance the medicine’s potency.
- Storage: The brew can be stored for several months if properly prepared and kept in a cool, dark place.
Expanded Section: Types of Ayahuasca Ceremonies
Traditional Amazonian Ceremonies
- Setting: Often conducted in a maloca (traditional roundhouse) or in nature.
- Duration: Typically last 4-8 hours, sometimes all night.
- Group Size: Can vary from intimate groups of 5-10 to larger ceremonies with 20-30 participants.
- Shamanic Techniques:
- Icaros (sacred songs) to guide the journey
- Use of chakapa (leaf bundle rattle) for energetic cleansing
- Tobacco rituals for protection and purification
- Plant Dietas: Often integrated with periods of isolation and dietary restrictions to connect with other plant spirits.
Neo-shamanic Ceremonies
- Setting: Can be conducted in various settings, from purpose-built ceremonial spaces to adapted indoor environments.
- Integration of Practices: May incorporate elements from various spiritual traditions, such as sound healing, breathwork, or meditation.
- Facilitation Style: Often more explanatory, catering to Western participants unfamiliar with traditional practices.
- Integration Work: Greater emphasis on psychological integration, often including sharing circles and individual counseling.
Santo Daime Ceremonies
- Structure: Highly structured rituals with specific hymns, prayers, and movements.
- Duration: Can last up to 12 hours.
- Attire: Participants often wear specific ceremonial clothing.
- Community Focus: Emphasis on collective experience and mutual support.
Therapeutic Sessions
- Clinical Setting: May be conducted in more clinical environments, especially in research contexts.
- Professional Support: Presence of trained therapists or healthcare professionals.
- Intention Setting: Focused on specific healing goals or psychological issues.
- Integration: Extensive pre and post-ceremony therapeutic work.
At Hotel Rivel, we offer a blend of traditional and contemporary approaches, always prioritizing safety, respect for the medicine, and individual support. Our ceremonies are led by experienced shamans and facilitators who can adapt the format to best serve each group’s needs.
