High in the Costa Rican mountains, amidst the emerald embrace of the cloud forests, flit a tiny avian acrobat – the Black-capped Flycatcher. This little tyrant flycatcher, with its dapper black cap and a persistent quest for prey, is a captivating resident of our mountain retreat.
A Bird of the High Canopy
For those seeking a glimpse of the Black-capped Flycatcher (Empidonax atriceps), you’ll need to train your eyes upwards. Unlike its lowland brethren, this little hunter prefers the high canopy of mountain oak forests. However, during the breeding season or along forest edges and clearings, you might find them venturing a little lower, offering a chance encounter.
Sharp Looks, Sharper Skills
The Black-capped Flycatcher is a small bird, barely exceeding 4.5 inches in length. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in alertness. Its most striking feature is the namesake black cap, contrasting beautifully with its olive-brown upperparts. The underparts are a paler brown, lightening to a whitish throat and a hint of yellow on the lower belly. Don’t miss the tell-tale teardrop-shaped white eyering, a distinctive mark that helps distinguish it from similar flycatcher species.
A Master of the Hunt
A true insectivore, the Black-capped Flycatcher spends its days perched on a high branch, meticulously scanning the surroundings. With a sharp flick of its tail and a quick dart, it snatches insects in mid-air, returning to its perch to devour its catch. Patient observers might even witness it hovering briefly, a technique employed to glean insects from foliage.
A Song of the Mountains
While not known for elaborate melodies, the Black-capped Flycatcher’s vocalizations are a charming part of the mountain soundscape. Listen for its simple, high-pitched “pip” call, a sound that echoes through the crisp mountain air.
A Haven for the Black-capped Flycatcher
The pristine mountain forests surrounding our retreat provide the perfect habitat for the Black-capped Flycatcher. With an abundance of insects and a healthy ecosystem, these little hunters thrive. For birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, a sighting of the Black-capped Flycatcher is a delightful reward, a chance to witness a tiny master of its mountain domain.
