Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we’re surrounded by a symphony of life. Today, we turn our gaze to a captivating resident of the rainforest canopy, the Baird’s trogon. This dazzling bird is a true spectacle, a splash of color against the lush backdrop.
A Tale of Two Plumages
The Baird’s trogon exhibits a fascinating sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females boast distinct appearances. The male is a vision of bold contrasts. His head and upper chest are a deep, mesmerizing blue-black, like a velvet cloak draped over his form. This dark majesty is offset by a stunning turquoise back, shimmering like a precious jewel under the rainforest’s dappled sunlight. The underparts, a vibrant crimson, explode with life, adding a fiery touch to his overall beauty. A pale blue bill and a matching eye ring complete his regal attire.
The female Baird’s trogon, while lacking the male’s flamboyant flair, possesses her own understated elegance. Her upperparts are a cool slate grey, blending seamlessly with the forest shadows. Her throat and breast are a paler shade of grey, transitioning to a rich red belly. This touch of red echoes the male’s vibrancy, hinting at the shared lineage.
A Life Among the Leaves
Baird’s trogons are primarily found on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica, gracing rainforests from the Tárcoles River southwards, with their presence extending into western Panama. They favor the shady haven of the rainforest canopy, though they can also be spotted at forest edges, venturing into tall secondary forests and even semi-open woodlands bathed in dappled sunlight. Their altitudinal range stretches from sea level up to a height of 1200 meters, offering opportunities for sightings across diverse rainforest zones.
A Master of Patience
The Baird’s trogon is a bird of solitude, often seen perched upright on a mid-level branch, its posture belying its active insect-hunting lifestyle. With keen eyes and an even keener sense of hearing, it scans the foliage for its prey, remaining motionless for extended periods. This patient strategy allows it to zero in on unsuspecting insects, upon which it swoops down with surprising agility. Their diet also includes small fruits and berries, adding a touch of variety to their menu.
A Song Unfolding
The Baird’s trogon’s call is a distinctive series of accelerating clucks, a rapid sequence that picks up speed and intensity. This unique vocalization serves as a territorial proclamation and a means of communication between mates.
