A Flash of Rufous: Unveiling the Cinnamon Woodpecker

Wake up to a symphony of drumming in the Costa Rican mountains! Today, we’re turning our spotlight on a vibrant resident of the rainforests bordering our retreat: the Cinnamon Woodpecker (Celeus loricatus).

A Feathery Flash of Cinnamon

As its name suggests, the Cinnamon Woodpecker is a stunning bird adorned with rich, rufous plumage. This medium-sized woodpecker, measuring around 19-23 cm (7.5-9.1 in), boasts a bushy crest that adds a touch of regality. Look closely, and you’ll notice subtle differences between the sexes. Males sport a striking red patch extending from their chin to their throat and malar stripe, while females have a uniform rufous coloration on their heads.

Masters of the Mountain Forests

Head into the verdant embrace of the Costa Rican mountains, and you might encounter the Cinnamon Woodpecker. Their natural habitat lies within subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, making our mountain retreat a perfect spot to observe these fascinating creatures. Primarily solitary or found in pairs, they frequent the middle levels and canopy of the trees, expertly navigating the dense foliage.

A symphony of Sound

While their drumming on trees is a telltale sign of their presence, their vocalizations are equally captivating. Listen for their series of loud, breathy whistles that descend in pitch. This call, often likened to those of other woodpeckers in the Celeus genus, can be a helpful clue in identifying them.

A Keystone Critter

The Cinnamon Woodpecker plays a vital role in the rainforest ecosystem. They act as natural pest controllers, using their strong beaks to excavate insects hidden beneath the bark. Their drumming also helps create cavities that other birds use for nesting.

Witnessing the Wonder

While sightings can be brief, the vibrant plumage and energetic drumming of the Cinnamon Woodpecker leave a lasting impression. If you’re staying at our retreat nestled in the mountains of Costa Rica, keep your eyes peeled (and ears perked) for this feathered wonder! With a little patience and guidance from our experienced naturalists, you might just get a glimpse of this dazzling woodpecker flitting through the rainforest canopy.
